About the event

Control & Voice

Most writers think about what their story is, but not how it should be read. Ever noticed how sometimes you blitz through a story at a hundred miles an hour, and others are slower, more measured? If the author knows what they're doing, then it's deliberate, and vital, for really good storytelling. In this lecture, we'll go over the basics and the nuances of the implementation of control and voice, which will put you firmly in the driver's seat of your writing.

In this intensive 2-hour session, we will cover:

  • What is Narrative Pacing?: We'll begin to understand the reasons writers would want to control narrative pace and how they do it.

  • Structuring for Speed: What mechanics affect reading speed and how you can use that effectively in scenes.

  • Using Voice to Ellicit Response: Choosing the right words to lend depth and character to your work.
