About the event

The Writer-Reader Relationship

When they start out, most writers focus on their own voice. But experienced authors focus on the reader’s experience. And that's why the best of them keep you churning the pages late into the night. In this lecture, we'll deconstruct the unspoken contract between writer and reader, and explore exactly what separates the unreadable from the unputdownable.

In this intensive 2-hour session, we will cover:

  • The Internal Contract: Understanding exactly what a reader expects in exchange for their time and emotional energy.

  • The Reward Mechanism: How to strategically 'pay' your reader for their attention using tension, clarity, and payoff.

  • Narrative Trust: How to build (and safely break) the bond of trust that keeps a reader engaged through the story.
