About the event

PACE & STYLE

A thriller only works if you can control how fast the reader turns the pages. This workshop is about the mechanics of the 'unputdownable' book—learning how to speed things up, slow them down, or stop a reader mid-sentence to get the reaction you want.

What we'll cover:

  • Controlling the Clock: How to use sentence structure and paragraph/chapter breaks to physically change how fast someone reads your work.

  • Voice and Language: Choosing words that create a specific emotional atmosphere rather than just describing a scene.

  • Narrative Stance: How you position your narration and how that changes how a reader feels about your characters.
